Practice Summary

Norman Walter practices commercial litigation and arbitration with an emphasis on civil fraud, company matters and cases with a financial dimension. His matters are typically complex, high in value, and multi-jurisdictional.

Norman ordinarily practices before the Commercial Court, the Chancery Division and appellate courts as well as before international commercial arbitration tribunals. In addition, in recent years Norman has acted in litigation in the British Virgin Islands and the Isle of Man, and he has advised in relation to litigation in Jersey, the Cayman Islands, Philippines, Mauritius, Hong Kong, India, Northern Ireland and Australia.

Norman is recommended by both Chambers UK and Legal 500 for commercial dispute resolution and civil fraud. He is described as being “one of the brightest juniors at the Commercial Bar”, and has been noted for his “robust, confident advocacy”, for being“tenacious and extremely committed”, and also for being “very clever, very strategic, very responsive and good to work with”. Norman has been said to be “a top junior with a razor sharp mind” who “demonstrates a strong creative flair and has the ability to take a case beyond its straightforward parameters”.

Norman has a specialism in restitution of tax. His cases in this area include landmark authorities such as Sempra Metals, in which the House of Lords decided that compound interest can be given in private law claims, overruling a number of the House’s previous decisions. He is counsel in Littlewoods, in which the Court of Appeal has recently upheld what is believed to be the largest judgment ever given by an English court, £1.25 billion.
